Week 9

Week Nine  This week in the book we went over chapter eight which discussed doing interior renderings with the marker elements. I liked the task of sketching the drawing within the book. These images gave a good idea of shadows and different elements within the design. In the book it went over the different drawing styles, basic style. The basic style uses primary, secondary, and tertiary colors combined with neutral colors. The modern style which uses black, white, and gray as the main colors. Combined with complementary colors, this makes the drawing look simple and sharp. The classical style, this uses darker colors to present a quiet or elegant space. The natural style, this uses neutrals as the main with lighter colors. It presents a natural feeling within a space.  I liked the option to draw the space within different color systems. This gave me the opportunity to create a unique space.      This week we also went over research for the container hom...

Week 7

Week Seven       This week we went over the Principles of Design. I really enjoyed this lesson especially relating it to the container home and thinking about how I can implement these ideas into my design. Rhythm is the repetition, progression, transition, and contrast of the design. This is used to enhance an interior and can be applied to color, texture, shape, and pattern. The rhythm of a design can be used to direct you through the space. There are six types that we went over. The first being repetition, this can be rounded or balanced. This creates a cohesive design. Gradation is increasing or decreasing and is the height or color. Gradation leads you through the space. Contrast is the objects right next to another and uses color, shape, and size to give the dramatic feeling. Transition is the movement that can be felt from place to place. And the last is radiation which is used to form around a central axis point.      Proportion and Scale...

Week Six

Week Six       This week we talked about texture and how that can add to a drawing. We were challenged with the skill of sketching an interior and adding texture to the sketch. It is important in interior design to add texture to not only sketches but also real-life interiors. It effects the way a room feel and how it is perceived by an individual. This is how we can differentiate contrasting materials In this chapter there were two different medias introduced, sharpie and pencil.          In the book I found it interesting how they shaded and detailed the windows. It adds more complexity and interest to the drawing and helps to develop it. Windows have lots of levels of reflection and tonal value. In the book it says to use broad strokes, vertical and horizontal strokes, and underlining of stone and brick.      Throughout the book it gave really good examples of using texture in an interior sketch. I especially lik...

Week Five

Blog Five       This week in class we talked about how Cultures Influence Color. First, we defined culture and explored different cultures. Culture is the social forms of a racial, religious, or a group that shares similar life path. Color is a huge symbol to background and experiences. It is important when talking about color to think about age, studies have shown that babies cry more in bright, yellow-colored rooms and couples fight more in bright yellow rooms.  Babies and children respond better to bright contrasting colors, it can affect they concentration or eye strain so it's important to take that into consideration. Youth ages are so influenced by social. Adults are very contrasting to their parents, running away from the colors their parents picked. Boomers are more active than the age before them and work longer. They tend to pick colors that their parents would have picked.  Gender also has a huge impact on color, in today's age they tend t...

Week 4

Blog Four  This week we talked about color and the value that color can have within a space. Our guest speaker brought up some very interesting knowledge about color. I think I took away the contents of pigment. Especially how they would have made different pigments before Morden materials. All pigments were made up of natural ingredients, but I was amazed what they would have actually used within the color. When you really think about it those materials were truly few and far between. Not even thinking about the labor it would have taken to obtain all the materials to create these vibrant colors.      Color truly effects an individual too, it effects the way you react and respond in spaces and how you interact with the spaces created. Over this past weekend I have been Dog sitting. It is a unique job that allows me to spend time in other people's spaces that they have created and designed themselves. This weekend the home I spent time in was very minimalistic,...

Week Two Blog Post

Week Two      This week we discussed lighting as well as color within lighting, I was very interested in the concept of light and how that majorly effects the design. When thinking of light, you need to think of what activities will be taking place in the environment. There are different types of light, ambient lighting, accent lighting, and mood lighting. Some of the most important lighting however is natural lighting, this is accomplished through windows, doors, and mirrors. Throughout our lesson as well we discussed lumens and how the larger room you have you would need more lumens in order to fully light the space.       When thinking about lighting it is important that you consider each space, having the correct lumens for the size and shape of the room. As well as thinking about the color temperature depending on the use of the space. For example, when designing a bedroom, the lighting will be different than a bathroom. In different spaces...

Week One Blog Post

Week One Blog Post     Throughout this week we went through notes on point, line, form, and plane. Point is the most basic element and is a stable feature. I found it interesting the idea of the focal point, this is something that really is everywhere, but we may not always pick up on it due to how common it is in design. Thinking about build in focal points vs created focal points. A built-in focal point can be a vaulted ceiling, fireplace, angled walls, or windows. All these things are focal point that are the foundation of the design. A created focal point could be artwork, back splashes, mirrors, and accent wall colors. All these design elements also draw your eye in.      We also talked about line and especially an implied line, this could be two points that create a line, the example talked about in class was in Washington D.C. and the line that connects the major monuments. Line has a huge play in design and can make an individual feel many differen...
