Week 7

 Week Seven

This week we went over the Principles of Design. I really enjoyed this lesson especially relating it to the container home and thinking about how I can implement these ideas into my design. Rhythm is the repetition, progression, transition, and contrast of the design. This is used to enhance an interior and can be applied to color, texture, shape, and pattern. The rhythm of a design can be used to direct you through the space. There are six types that we went over. The first being repetition, this can be rounded or balanced. This creates a cohesive design. Gradation is increasing or decreasing and is the height or color. Gradation leads you through the space. Contrast is the objects right next to another and uses color, shape, and size to give the dramatic feeling. Transition is the movement that can be felt from place to place. And the last is radiation which is used to form around a central axis point.

Proportion and Scale are another point that we discussed that gives the emphasis on design. We talked in class how some spaces can be unproportional or not to scale. This can give the impression that a space is not quite right, you can feel within the space that the sizing isn't correct. An instance that I have felt this before was when in New York City for a trip with my sister. The city doesn't give an individual lot of living space so designing a residence in the city can be difficult. My sister and I stayed in a one-bedroom Airbnb, and you can feel that the furniture within the space was too large for the space itself. The rooms felt too small for a room of its size. This can be a difficult space to design since we don't get any smaller so the furniture we need stays the same size.

This could also be compared in the thought of our container home. We talked about how big a singular container is and if we were to try to make one container into a bedroom how it might feel crammed or tight. Proportion and size are very important to create cohesive livable spaces.

In the book this week we talked about presenting materials with markers and rendering with markers. I found this week helpful since this is something that we are now experimenting with more. I like working with the markers it helps me experiment with the spaces more. The color project that we did for example helped me to pick out and work with the elements I was sketching and adding detailing to.

  1. Hi Anna! I think you summarized the material this week very well! I also like how you added forethought into your container home. Nice job!
